Gambling
Basic Information
Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods. Typically, the outcome of the wager is evident within a short period.
The term gaming in this context typically refers to instances in which the activity has been specifically permitted by law. The two words are not mutually exclusive; i.e., a “gaming” company offers (legal) “gambling” activities to the public. This distinction is not universally observed in the English-speaking world, however. For instance, in the UK, the regulator of gambling activities is called the Gambling Commission (not the Gaming Commission). Also, the word gaming is frequently used to describe activities that do not involve wagering, especially online. (Wikipedia)
Gambling Addiction
Gambling Addition is also known as Compulsive Gambling. From the Gambler's Anonymous website: "The explanation that seems most acceptable to Gamblers Anonymous members is that compulsive gambling is an illness, progressive in its nature, which can never be cured, but can be arrested."
People who have an addiction to gambling can not stop, in the same manner as a person who is addicted to alcohol or drugs can not stop. It is not a matter of willpower. Help for compulsive gamblers can be found at the website linked above.
Gambling Online
Gambling online has become very popular, with many gambling websites available. Some of these websites operate legally and some do not, and different circumstances affect the legality of the games. You should do your research before participating in any online gambling websites and games. Check out Google News for "online gambling" for the latest information.
