Who is Cliff?

Cliff Hillegass was born in a rural Nebraska town called Rising City. Cliff had a love of literature from the time he was young, and put himself through college with two paper routes.

Cliff worked full-time as a representative for Long's College Bookstore while he was a graduate student in geology and physics.

He developed the idea for Cliff's Notes through a contact he made through this job. A company in Canada was producing study guides under the name of Cole's Notes. Jack Cole, the owner, mentioned to Cliff that American students might like a version of their own to use, and with that idea Cliff started CliffsNotes in 1958.
